NMEA 2000 for Beginners: What It Is, Why You Need It, and How to Set It Up

NMEA 2000 (N2K) is the standard network protocol that lets your chartplotter, radar, autopilot, engine data, wind instruments, and AIS share information on a single cable backbone.

What You Need

  • NMEA 2000 backbone cable (typically 6–10 meters for a center console)
  • Two 120Ω terminators (one at each end of the backbone)
  • T-connectors for each device
  • Powered tap (often integrated in a MFD or powered T-connector)

Planning a full electronics upgrade? Start with your chartplotter/MFD, then add radar and autopilot on the same network. We’ll spec your backbone for free.
